Habiter — Au-delà de ma chambre

“YOUR TEEN YEARS ARE THE BEGINNING OF REAL LIFE.” – ALICE
Habiter — Au-delà de ma chambre is an intimate journey into the thoughts of four Montreal teenagers—Hamza, Gwenaël, Alice and Lysandre—who share their thoughts on what “home” means, from the perspective of their personal space within their family environment: their room.

This project is light-years away from other, more analytical and statistics-driven treatments of the phenomenon. Photographer Caroline Hayeur invites us to explore the private spaces of adolescence through the spontaneous accounts of these four youngsters, whose words are remixed by composer Myléna Bergeron.

At the invitation of the photographer, who provided each of them with a camera, Hamza, Gwenaël, Alice and Lysandre were each asked to create three images representing their visions of family, wellness, and a favourite pastime. As the creative process unfolded, the clicking of shutters triggered true bonds between the teens and the photographer, who here uses the medium as an authentic tool of expression and interrelation. In this “ode to wellness,” each participant has depicted and shared their vision of family and of their “imaginary house,” translating their personal space of freedom into images.
